Advancing Women’s Economic Empowerment 2/23/2017 MenEngage Alliance

In advance of the 61st session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, “Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Changing World of Work” and its concurrent theme addressing the challenges and achievements in implementing the millennium development goals for women and girls, the MenEngage Alliance, with support from Rutgers University’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, wrote a statement of support with recommendations for governments to follow.

South Korea ranks among the lowest in terms of women’s economic empowerment, with its pay gap between men and women estimated to need more than 100 years to close if the current pace continues, an annual report said Tuesday.

The Women In Work Index 2017 released by the PricewaterhouseCoopers put South Korea 32nd among 33 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, with an index of 37.3 compared with the OECD average of 58.7. Mexico was the only lower-ranked country with 34.8. Iceland topped the list with 77.6, followed by Sweden’s 74.6.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a new initiative to support and empower rural women across the country. The organisation last week launched the second phase of Rural Women Economic Empowerment (RWEE) project to help accelerate economic empowerment for women.

Over 51 per cent of work done by women in India is unpaid and not counted in national statistics, with some estimates even putting this proportion at 85-92 per cent, says a report by the high-level panel set up by the UN Secretary General. This calls for greater government, business and civil society partnership to meet the Sustainable Development Agenda by 2030.

According to the report, the representation of women in the local government has increased from 5 per cent in 1993 to 40 per cent in 2005, exceeding the mandated quota of 33 per cent.

More than 110 countries have some type of quota for women in parliaments and 11 have quotas to increase the gender balance of government agencies, said a UN report.

The UN’s lead agencies in development policy advice and gender equality are joining forces in a $790,000 programme to put gender perspectives into the heart of effective macroeconomic policy. UNCTAD and UN Women will combine their capacities to provide advice and a framework that incorporate the gender dimension in models of growth and development, and in particular the effects of the unpaid “care economy”.

The UK has climbed to its highest ever position in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) Women in Work Index, ranking 13th out of 33 OECD countries for 2015.
